With democracy and the rule of law seriously threatened in the United States, Canada must consider the potential of a changed North American environment. There is ,of course, a chance that the U.S. justice department will spring into action and that Donald Trump and his whole gang, including prominent Republican lawmakers, fake electors, TV personalities, Supreme Court Justices, and his other enablers will end up in prison.

Best result would be an FBI dragnet for all of the conspirators culminating in Trump and family running to Russia to avoid extradition.

But, the other possibility is that the Republicans win the next election, and the U.S. joins Russia and China as another totalitarian Autocracy.

Where does this leave Canada? Suddenly, Canada will find itself in exactly the same position as Ukraine, a semi dependant nation bordering an undisciplined bully. Except, Canada will have no world power allies to help. As Russia did in Ukraine, or, as the U.S. did in Iraq, A totalitarian U.S. could simply invent a pretext and the invasion of Canada would begin. Remember that Trump has already laid the groundwork for such a scenario by claiming that Canada took advantage of the U.S. on trade during the new NAFTA negotiations, and declaring Canada as a security risk and imposing punitive tariffs

Canada’s reality Today

In Trade

Canada has, since the end of WW2,been tied to the U.S. Canada /U.S trade has long been encouraged, so long as the U.S. corporations had the upper hand in each and every deal and in every commodity and as long as Canada understood that any small benefit we received was dependent on U.S. generosity

In Defence

At the beginning of the Cold War, the U.S. saw a risk from their enemy, the Soviet Union. Under the auspices of the Air Defence Command (ADC), first created in 1948, and reconstituted in 1951 at Ent. AFB, Colorado, subordinate Air Force
commands were given responsibility to protect the various regions of the United States.

By 1954, as concerns about Soviet capabilities became more grave, a multi-service unified command was
created, involving Naval, Army, and Air Force units—the Continental Air Defence Command
(CONAD).

As Air Force leaders developed plans and proposed warning system programs, they
became convinced of the logical need for extended cooperation with America’s continental neighbour, Canada. And with the advent of NORAD ( the North American Aerospace Defence Force), Canada willingly became the killing ground for U.S. continental defence. Nuclear bombers and missiles attacking from the north would be intercepted and destroyed over Canada while the U.S territory remained unscathed.

The truth is that Canada has always been dominated by the U.S. Dominated in a reasonably benevolent way, but dominated all the same. The U.S has accepted Canada’s independence, so long as Canada worked in deference to U.S. global strategic and internal policies.

Attack intercepted over Canada. US defended. Canada becomes the killing ground.

Much like Ukraine’s historic ties to Russia, Canada is economically, politically and socially tied to the U.S. But, if the U.S. continues to embrace tyrannical laws, loss of liberty, rampant racism, rejection of democracy, loss of liberty and human rights, and violence, the U.S. will present a clear and present danger to Canada. Canada must prepare to protect itself.

Future Canada

With the potential fall of American democracy, it is time for Canada to declare our independence from U.S. dominance. Canada must learn to defend itself, find new friends, forge new alliances and pivot away from U.S. control. How?

First, we leave NORAD, a defence alliance that provides no actual defence to Canada. and resolve to protect Canada on our own, from all threats. Sweden has for many years gone its own way in defending itself, Canada simply needs to decide to do the same.

Second: restrict purchases of U.S. military equipment. In particular, cancel the U.S. strategically, and technologically controlled F35 purchase, and buy the SAAB Gripen While the electronics within the F35 will always be controlled by the U.S., which means that, unlike Ukraine, if we were to need our U.S. made fighters to fight an invading U.S., they could simply make our aircraft useless. Gripen fighters made in Canada, on the other hand also provide an opportunity for Canada to upgrade the airplane’s capability with Canadian developed and controlled technologies. American military corporations would leave Canada, but they could be directly replaced by European companies.

Policy says U.S. won’t defend Canada from missile attack: says NORAD General

“We’re being told in Colorado Springs that the extant U.S. policy is not to defend Canada,” said Canadian Lt.-Gen. Pierre St-Amand, deputy commander of Colorado-based Norad.

Third: Focus our trade initiatives on Europe and other countries that share our social values, and on a new CANZUK ( Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK) agreement,

Fourth: develop east/west pipelines in unison with a massive trade pivot toward Europe and Asia, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, and shipbuilding industries. Trading oil and minerals for cars, ships, and planes.

Five: develop Ports like Churchill, Dalhousie and St Johns. Rapidly grow these ports and their capacities to ship product east. Create and enlarge shipping capacity to the west as well.

The New Migration

Canada should expect retribution from the new U.S.,and prepare accordingly. In addition, a mass migration could develop across our southern border as Americans from the majority Democratic parts of the U.S., determine that Republican tyranny is just too much to take. If millions of Americans move north, Canada should welcome them, so long as they understand that with Canada’s free medical care and social norms of acceptance and freedoms comes strict gun laws. Border security against infiltration of the darker elements of American society would have to be strong and strictly controlled

With this potential immigration surge, Small Canadian towns could rapidly expand overnight, creating a boom in infrastructure construction, demand for jobs and housing.

Defence

Without Canadian’s long standing fictional stance that U.S. strength would protect our country, a realistic national defence policy would have to be developed over-night. A defence policy covering four borders, three coasts, and including land, sea, air, and space defence. The sooner this realization materializes the better.
