American are fond of saying that their country is the best because of ‘AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM”
In this post we will investigate just how exceptional the U.S.A. is.
There are of course the obvious. The United States has the largest economy in the world as well as the largest military in the world
Economy
The U.S. GDP of nearly 21 trillion dollars, and equals the total GDP of the next three countries combined, China, Japan and Germany.
Military
On the subject of the military, The United States Air Force, The United States Navy, The United States Army and The United States Marines maintain four of five of the largest air forces in the world, They maintain the first, second, fourth and fifth largest forces, with Russia holding the third spot. The U.S. Navy far surpasses any other countries with more personnel than the navies of Russia, China, Japan,The UK, France, India and South Korea combined. The number of U.S. warships is second only to China.
Policing
But let’s look at some more daily statistics like Policing. The number of police per 100,000 people in the U.S falls below some countries, with less police per 100,000 people than Sweden, Germany, Belgium, or Greece, and more police per 100,000 than Norway, Australia, France, Japan, Canada or Finland. The important measure, however is the crime rates. The homicide rate in the U.S. is nearly 21,000 per year, Sweden’s total is only 124, Germany’s is 782, Australia, 221, France, 779, Canada 743. The U.S. ranks second in the world for gun deaths. Surpassed only by Brazil. In these measures the U.S. is truly exceptional
Mass Murders
Deaths due to mass murders is another statistic that shows American exceptionalism. In the U.S., there have been more than 200 people killed in mass murders from January to June, 2022 . In Canada there have been none, In Australia – none. In Sweden none, Italy 4. The U.S surpasses every European country plus Canada and Australia in number of people killed per year per million population with a whopping .056 people per million. This converts to approximately 175 people per year on average murdered in mass killings in the U.S Every other developed country averages close to zero. Exceptional!
Guns
The U.S. population is roughly 326.5 million yet the firearms in civilian possession is 393.3 million, or 120.5 guns for every 100 people. Yemen, a country that has been at war since 2014 has only 52.8 guns per 100 people. In 2020, nearly 20,000 Americans lost their lives to guns, the highest toll in more than two decades and 2021 was worse. In this statistic, America is truly exceptional
Poverty
The poverty rate in the U.S., the richest country in the world is 17.8 %. Just slightly better than Cambodia and higher than Portugal(17.2), Sweden (17.1), Germany(14.8), France (13.6), Norway (12.7), Australia (12.4) or Canada (11.6). Exceptional!
Healthcare
The U.S. is ranked 18th in the world for its healthcare system, following 12 European Countries plus Australia and Canada. Exceptional!
The infant mortality rate in the United States was 5.44 per 100,000 live births in 2020. This rate was 50th among the 195 countries and territories measured, and significantly higher than in dozens of other countries such as Sweden (2.15), Japan (1.82), and Australia (3.14). Exceptional
Quality of Government
The U.S ranks 11 on this list behind New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Canada, Norway and Australia. We at ‘Notes From the North’ don’t think that geniuses who speaking like this are helping.

Most Americans are confident that everyone wants to move to the U.S.A. After all, the U.S. is the best country in the world, Right! Wrong! Per a US News & World Report the U.S. ranks only sixth in the world as the best country, after Canada, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Australia. The U.S. ranks 20th as the best country to live in after Canada, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Germany and Australia.
Good News – The U.S. has more prisoners than anyone, including China
There are of course areas where the U.S. does excel. The U.S. leads the world in incarcerated people. The U.S. has a whopping 2,068,000 people in prisons, or 629 for every 100,000 people. More even than China, and of those imprisoned, 4,347 per 10,000 are black.
In racial equality measures, of the 78 countries ranked, the United States, birthplace of the Black Lives Matter movement, finished among the bottom 10 countries for racial equality, a lower ranking than China, a country the international community has condemned and imposed sanctions over its treatment of its Muslim Uyghur population. The top five countries for racial equality are; The Netherlands, Canada, NewZealand, Sweden, and Denmark
Education
In a measure of most educated countries, the US ranks only sixth after Canada, Japan, Isreal, UK and South Korea. Even with the number one education system in the world.
The U.S. states of New York, California and Maryland have more lawyers per capita than most countries. There are between 888,000 and 1.3million lawyers in the US, by far the most in any country. More lawyers than any other country in the worldand still more major crime. Exceptional!
Summary
American exceptionalism – When compared with civilized, developed, western countries, all of which have freedom, all of which are democracies, America has more guns, more gun deaths, more poor people, more inarticulate politicians, and more people claiming that their country is the best in the world than any other country on the planet. Yet, only in America are you much more likely to be imprisoned if you are black. Only in America can you be murdered while going to get groceries. Only in America do police arrest parents while letting a murderer kill their children. Only in America can you be murdered while practicing your religion. Only in America can you be killed for jogging. Only in America can you be murdered while in elementary school. Only in America can you be killed by police on the street. Only in America can you be bankrupted for acquiring an illness. Only in America can you be killed while attending a concert. Only in America do are schools provided with police protection, that still doesn’t protect the children. Only in America can you be shot and killed by armed vigilantes while practicing your constitutional right to protest. ONLY IN AMERICA – THIS IS HOW AMERICA IS EXCEPTIONAL! AND THIS IS WHAT THE WORLD SEES!
