Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has Jason Kenney and others making the case for more Canadian oil and gas, but the path forward isn’t so clear cut

Blah Blah Blah – Unlike the opinions in Mr. Anderson’s article , here at ‘Notes from the North’ we see a simpler Canadian solution. Drew Anderson and his ‘Council for Canadians’ – ” I’m not sure how they automatically feel that they speak for all Canadians, but they do”, see anti oil as their God given life’s mission At any rate Drew’s article takes the position that any idea of increasing Canadian oil and gas production in order to help Europe repel Russian pressures be some kind of a fake move by oil companies to take more oil from the ground and create more wealth for themselves and more global warming. Apparently in the Climate activist’s mind, it is all about them. There can be no possible view that Russia controls way too much of Europe’s energy needs , that Russia is using that oil and gas to threaten European countries, and that maybe Canada could use some of our resources to help.

Eight years ago Trans Canada Energy proposed extending its West-East natural gas pipeline which was working at only 50% capacity, and converting it to carry oil from Alberta to New Brunswick. Climate Activists were all over that idea and it didn’t happen. Now much of Europe could end up without energy thanks to Mr. Putin. I suppose those same climate activists don’t care if people in Europe can’t heat their homes, cook, or travel. They are out saving the world, so little things like wars and millions of refugees don’t really matter. They feel good about themselves.

Unfortunately energy is a geopolitical reality and at the moment Russia can cut oil and natural gas supplies to millions of people, and hold much of Europe hostage. Canada could have been in a position right now to ship natural gas to our European allies, but we can’t because the activists and a bleeding heart prime minister wanted to take the high ground and be the white knights of the anti oil and gas world. So, now we have an international crisis and Canada is on the sidelines.

NOW WHAT?

In Mr. Anderson’s article he talks about Alberta politician’s idea of producing more oil, sending it to the US and somehow that will help Europe. In this, we totally agree with him. That is a dumb idea. Why would we want to sell more oil and gas to the US? We at ‘Notes from the North’, think there is a better solution. 1. Build an LNG (liquified Natural Gas) Terminal in New Brunswick. 2. Extend the west-east natural gas pipeline to New Brunswick. 3. Don’t convert the pipeline to oil, increase its capacity to 100%. 4. Ship natural gas to Europe. 5. Build another gas pipeline from Alberta to Churchill Manitoba, with another LNG terminal, and ship gas from there as well. This would be a much more direct solution.

The activist’s stance is clear. Let Russia cut off Europes energy lifeline and let the Europeans freeze in the dark. Or maybe they should miraculously convert all of their energy needs to renewable energy over the weekend.

Look, Climate change is a real problem. We get it. And there are millions of people working on solutions, But, everyone doesn’t have an electric car YET. Alternate fuels for airplanes, ships, and railway engines aren’t available YET. We still need Oil to make lubricants, oil byproducts and plastic. In the meantime, oil and, particularly natural gas, are needed and are a major energy sources for much of the world.
