WHY? – NORAD By Their Policy ‘DOES NOT PROTECT CANADA’!
A new CTV news article cites Vladimir Putins invasion of Ukraine as a reason for Canada to increase its funding of NORAD, the ‘North American Aerospace Defence Command’. What the article doesn’t say is that since 2017 it has not been the policy of the US or NORAD to defend Canada.
As quoted by Lee Berthiaume of the Canadian Press in a September 24, 2017 Globe and Mail article, Canadian Lt. General Pierre St-Armand deputy commander of Colorado-based Norad. the top Canadian officer at the North American Aerospace Defence Command said; ” Current U.S. policy directs the American military not to defend Canada if it is targeted in a ballistic missile attack”, “We’re being told in Colorado Springs that the extant U.S. policy is not to defend Canada,” St-Amand delivered that revelation Thursday during an appearance before the House of Commons defence committee, which is studying the extent to which Canada is ready for an attack by North Korea. Seriously! North Korea has issues with Canada? Because the US wants to pick fights with countries much smaller than them, does not constitute an issue for Canada.
Reality is that NORAD doesn’t defend Canada and never has. The same Canadian Press reporter who published the revelation that NORAD doesn’t protect Canada is now promoting that Canada should anti-up with more money for NORAD. Apparently he forgot his own previous article. Again – WHY? Both the original article and the current one have the same underlying objectives. To create a pending threat that will force Canada to buy American air defence equipment and join their missile defence program. The Liberal government insists according Berthiaume’s latest article that upgrading NORAD is a priority. If it is, it shouldn’t be. NORAD doesn’t help Canada . The US doesn’t care about defending Canada, and never has, snd Canada doesn’t need NORAD. The whole design of NORAD is to create a no-mans-land between Russia and the US to give the US a buffer in which to create a defence in depth for the US. In short, missiles fired at the US by Russia will be intercepted and destroyed, not before they reach Canada but over Canada, with potential nuclear fallout raining down on our country.
So What should Canada do
First Canada should leave NORAD altogether. As we have shown, it doesn’t benefit Canada, and Canada doesn’t need it There may have been a time, but that time no longer exists.
Canada should maintain control of the Dew Line, the only true Canadian Defence line. Canada should increase the Dew Line’s capability and augment it by improved space assets.
The DEW line ( or North Warning System) is a string of radars across the far north currently managed by an Inuit owned Nasittuq Corp, under a $592 million dollar contract. Built in the 1980s, this radar system is currently outdated in its capability to see lang range, over the horizon, threats and to completely cover the Canadian arctic archipelago. Upgrading these capabilities and adding additional air intercept capabilities should be part of Canada’s defence strategy. In short, Canada’s security needs to be in Canadian hands, otherwise the leaders of other countries can and will abandon us the minute it doesn’t fit their interests. The days of assuming that the US will protect us through some noble act of friendship is both naive and unrealistic. The US and no-one else is going to protect Canada. WE have to do that ourselves.
